Fork-tailed cat of yokai folklore in Japan. There are two very different types: the ones that live in the mountains, and the ones raised domestically that grow old and transform. It is often confused with Bakeneko. This form of the word refers to the type of cat that grows old and transforms into a supernatural split-tailed cat. In some artistic depictions, they were seen to mournfully play the shamisen.
