Origin:
Early 16th century: from French vipère or Latin vipera, from vivus ‘alive’ + parere ‘bring forth.’
Temple and pit refer to its "preferred" location and its facial structure.

Definition:
A venomous snake with large hinged fangs, typically having a broad head and stout body, with dark patterns on a lighter background.
Tropidolaemus wagleri (Temple Pit Viper) is a venomous pit viper species native to Southeast Asia. No subspecies are currently recognized.
It is sometimes referred to as the temple viper because of its abundance around the Temple of the Azure Cloud in Malaysia.
