Also fire-fly, "An insect which has the faculty of becoming luminous" [Century Dictionary], 1650s, from fire (n.) + fly (n.).

Definition:
A soft-bodied beetle related to the glowworm, the winged male and flightless female of which both have luminescent organs.
The light is chiefly produced as a signal between the sexes, especially in flashes.
Specifically the Photinus genus is thought of when thinking of the common firefly, they are sometimes called rover fireflies.
